Glass processing downtime: how our spare parts stock and after-sales service cut restart times

When a grinding machine stops, how quickly it goes back into production depends almost entirely on two factors: the immediate availability of critical spare parts and the responsiveness of the technical service. At our plant in Seregno, in the Brianza area of northern Italy, both are structured to keep downtime as short as possible. The spare parts warehouse holds stock for every Schiatti grinding machine currently in production, the after-sales office sits inside the same production facility, and our technicians, trained on our own machines, provide assistance on site and remotely.

Why downtime in a glass processing shop weighs more than it seems

Even half a day of downtime on a grinding line means square metres of glass not produced, delayed orders and, for shops running just-in-time, downstream customers stuck. The mechanical and electronic parts of a grinding machine, however robust, remain exposed to wear and to routine failures. The difference between a glass processor losing hours and one losing weeks is not the accident of the fault itself, but the way the spare parts supply chain is organised.

Spare parts warehouse for glass processing machinery in Seregno: a physical stock, not a made-to-order catalogue

Our over 7,000 sqm plant in Seregno houses a dedicated, staffed spare parts warehouse. In stock we keep the critical components for all Schiatti machines currently in production: grinding spindles, motors, bearings, pneumatic and electronic components. These are physical parts, not promises of availability from third-party suppliers, and this makes it possible to prepare a shipment within hours of the request.

A less visible but equally relevant aspect: the warehouse also covers machines sold many years ago. This is a direct consequence of how we design and assemble our machines, with standardised components and backwards-compatible spare parts, and of the fact that a Schiatti grinding machine typically keeps running for two or three decades in a glass processing shop.

Technical after-sales service: whoever picks up the phone knows the machine

Our after-sales and spare parts office works in the same building where the machines are designed, built and tested. It is not an outsourced service: whoever answers the phone has the machine's file in front of them, knows the configuration that left the plant and knows which component to order from the warehouse.

The first intervention is almost always by phone, and often resolves the issue. Many faults are diagnosed through a series of guided checks or remotely, without the need for a site visit. When the intervention requires access to the control parameters, our service works remotely on the machines set up for it. Only afterwards, if necessary, does a technician leave the same day.

Scheduled maintenance for glass processing machinery: prevention costs less than repair

Alongside emergency assistance, we offer scheduled and predictive maintenance plans. The aim is to catch component wear before it turns into a fault: preventive replacement of bearings based on operating hours, periodic checks on the grinding tools, verification of the cooling and lubrication parameters. For a glass processing shop, the return on investment is measured in downtime events that never happen.

How to reach Schiatti after-sales service

For spare parts orders, technical support requests or to activate a scheduled maintenance plan, our after-sales office answers at the Schiatti Angelo Srl contact details, Monday to Friday. Requests are taken in hand immediately and processed with a very short turnaround, anywhere in the world.
